I included in last issues editor letter that I would keep readers posted of my condition, so here is a synopsis.
Four surgeries and an infection... Sounds like a movie title, but that has been my life the last few months. I was a stimulus package to the medical industry. Although it was at times traumatic, I got through the surgeries and staff infection, taking it day-by-day, and have moved onto chemotherapy with Almaden's own oncologist, Dr. Cohen. I just have to thank all my pals listed on the pink page for being there for me, as well as my dear family. I probably didn't list a few wonderful friends, but that is understandable, as I was taking pain medication for much of that window which makes the thought process a little fuzzy and didn't have a sign in sheet by the door - not a bad idea for future reference.
I will be completing chemo for the next four months, and after my first experience realize everything I was told about the experience is true. Cancer treatment is a numbers game. Statistical data is used to determine treatment and odds for a cure. It is a strange science, as technology is still behind in effectively diagnosing cancer at early stages in many instances, or identifying when cancer is completely gone, so there is some creative license. A tumor needs to be a certain size before it is detectable. As a stage 3 patient, after chemo, the next step will be radiation. If you want to know more about this journey and the details of the surgeries, chemo, or supportive times with friends, I will be writing a detailed version of my experiences next year. For now, I will simply include some occasional updates for those beautiful, inquiring minds out there. I hope next Holiday Season I will be a happy, cancer-free camper. ;-)
